How Long Does a Custom Suit Take? A Complete Timeline from Consultation to Collection

How Long Does a Custom Suit Take? A Complete Timeline from Consultation to Collection

It’s the first question almost every first-time custom suit client asks, and it’s completely reasonable: how long is this going to take?

The honest answer is: longer than you think, but shorter than you might fear — and every day of that time is doing something important for the fit and quality of the finished garment.

At BARG Garments in Alexandria, VA, a custom suit made through BARG’s bespoke process — created specifically for your measurements, proportions, and posture rather than from a standard-size pattern — typically takes approximately five weeks. The standard process includes consultation, measurements and design selections, creation of a separate fitting garment in basic fabric, refinement of the garment’s balance, proportions, comfort, and movement, construction in the selected final fabric, and a final fit review.

BARG also understands that clients may have different deadlines. Four-week timelines may be possible with advance planning while still completing the fitting process. For qualifying urgent orders, a garment may sometimes be completed in as little as two weeks, depending on fabric availability, design complexity, and the production schedule. In those situations, BARG may proceed directly with the final fabric without creating a separate test garment. Expedited feasibility is confirmed before an order is accepted, and quality remains the priority.

Step 1: Complimentary Consultation & Quote

Before a single measurement is taken, you have a consultation with master tailor Reza Mohammadi, who brings more than 25 years of tailoring experience to BARG Garments. This is not a formality — it’s the foundation of everything that follows.

During the consultation, Reza discusses:

  • Your intended use for the suit — business, a wedding, a formal event, or everyday wear
  • Your lifestyle and how you typically move through the day
  • Your style preferences — including lapel width, button stance, vents, and pocket styles
  • Your fabric preferences and the types of fabrics best suited to your needs
  • Your budget
  • Your timeline and any important event dates

With those choices in mind, Reza provides a fixed price quote so you know the cost before moving forward.

This consultation directly shapes the design and construction of your suit. A suit for a congressional hearing has different requirements than one for a summer wedding in the Virginia countryside. Knowing this upfront allows Reza to make decisions throughout the process that serve your actual needs.

“My first question is whether the client wants a versatile suit for much of the year or something specifically for warmer or colder weather. I also ask where and how often they will wear it, because an everyday office suit and a summer outdoor wedding suit have different requirements.”

— Reza Mohammadi

Step 2: Measurements, Fit Assessment, and Fabric Selection

As a foundational stage of the bespoke model, Reza takes the client’s individual measurements and evaluates body shape and posture so the garment can be designed around that specific body rather than adapted from a generic size.

During this process, fabric, style, and construction details are finalized, with Reza guiding the client through approximately 300 fabric options across the custom clothing range. This is the combined selection for suits, tuxedos, dress shirts, sport coats, formal separate jackets, and winter overcoats, including 100% cashmere options. The direction is based on how and where you plan to wear the suit, Virginia’s climate, your personal coloring, and your preferences for feel, drape, weight, composition, and appearance.

“In the Washington, DC and Northern Virginia climate, I usually advise first-time bespoke clients to begin with a versatile, mid-weight wool. Navy, charcoal, and medium gray work well across multiple seasons and can move easily from business meetings to weddings and formal events. A fabric should be selected not only for its appearance, but also for comfort, climate, frequency of wear, durability, and the purpose of the garment.”

— Reza Mohammadi

Design details — including lapel width, button stance, lining color, pocket style, and vents — are finalized before the first fitting garment is created.

Client Spotlight:

A client recently approached BARG Garments for a coordinated five-suit wedding-party order in dark green stretch wool. The garments needed to look formal and refined while remaining comfortable throughout a long wedding day. Reza recommended two-button, notch-lapel jackets with side vents and slim trousers, then refined the fit individually for each member of the wedding party rather than applying one standard silhouette to everyone.

Step 3: First Fitting Garment

Once the measurements, fabric, design, and construction details are finalized, BARG creates a separate fitting garment in a basic fabric. This allows Reza to evaluate the garment on the client before cutting the client’s selected final fabric.

During the trial fitting, Reza assesses and refines the garment based on balance, proportions, comfort, and movement. Any necessary adjustments are incorporated before BARG proceeds with the final garment.

Step 4: Final Garment, Fit Review, and Collection

After the fitting has been evaluated and the necessary refinements made, BARG produces the garment in the client’s selected final fabric.

The completed garment is then reviewed on the client to confirm the fit. Under the Custom Fit Guarantee, BARG will make any additional adjustments needed before the process is complete and the garment is ready for collection.

The result is a suit created specifically for the individual client — not a standard silhouette adapted after the fact.

How to Plan: Suit Timelines for Common Events

Wedding Suits

For a wedding, BARG recommends scheduling at least 6–8 weeks before the wedding date. The standard bespoke process takes approximately five weeks, and the additional lead time provides room for scheduling and any adjustments that may be needed before a fixed event.

Business and Professional Suits

For a business suit without a hard event date, plan around BARG’s standard timeline of approximately five weeks. If you do have a firm deadline, raise it during the consultation so feasibility can be discussed before the order is accepted.

Black-Tie and Formal Events

For Washington, DC charity galas, embassy receptions, military formal balls, and other fixed-date formal events, contact BARG as early as practical. The standard bespoke process takes approximately five weeks, and additional lead time reduces scheduling risk and allows room for any necessary adjustments.

Accommodating Tighter Deadlines

BARG Garments understands that clients do not always have five weeks to work with. With advance planning, a timeline of approximately four weeks may be possible while still completing the fitting process and maintaining BARG’s standard of quality.

For genuinely urgent orders, BARG may be able to complete a custom suit or tuxedo in as little as two weeks. These expedited orders depend on fabric availability, design complexity, and the production schedule. In qualifying cases, BARG may proceed directly with the selected final fabric rather than creating a separate test garment, followed by a final fit review and any necessary adjustments.

Expedited feasibility is confirmed before the order is accepted.

How BARG Garments Compares to Other Suit Timelines

Turnaround times vary across made-to-measure (MTM) and bespoke providers because the processes are different. MTM begins with an existing base pattern that is modified to the client’s measurements. BARG’s bespoke process begins with an individually drafted pattern created specifically for the client and includes a separate fitting garment before the selected final fabric is cut. That additional stage allows the fit to be evaluated and refined before the finished garment is made.

At BARG, that standard bespoke process takes approximately five weeks. Comparing turnaround times is most useful when comparing providers that are offering a similar process and level of individual fit refinement.

In one client review, a customer reported receiving a custom suit from BARG within four weeks after another major tailor in the area had turned him away because of his tight deadline. Reza was able to deliver on the requested schedule.

FAQs: Custom Suit Timelines

Q: How many times will I need to visit the studio?

Q: Do I need an appointment for the initial consultation?

A: Walk-ins are welcome; however, appointments are recommended so we can provide a focused, private, one-on-one consultation.

Q: How much does a custom suit cost at BARG Garments?

A: Custom suits and tuxedos at BARG Garments typically range from $1,800 to $3,500. Final pricing depends on the selected fabric, garment type, design details, and construction, including Half Canvas or Full Canvas options.

Q: Can I get a custom suit in less than 3 weeks?

A: Urgent orders may be completed in as little as two weeks, depending on fabric availability, design complexity, and BARG’s production schedule. In these situations, BARG may proceed directly with the final fabric without creating a separate test garment, followed by a final fit review and any necessary adjustments. Expedited feasibility is confirmed before the order is accepted.

Q: Does the timeline differ for women’s suits?

A: No.  BARG creates custom garments for both men and women. The standard bespoke suit timeline is approximately five weeks; clients should confirm the timeline for their specific garment during the consultation.
